Tricialyn and Dan’s Vermont Winter Ski Resort Wedding - Photographed by Love Wins Photography
We’re winter lovers, inside and out. So, anytime Kim and I photograph a Vermont winter wedding, we wholeheartedly embrace the opportunity, and the challenges it will likely bring. And given our extensive backgrounds in the snow sports industry, it’s probably no surprise to learn our favorite type of winter wedding is a Vermont ski resort wedding.
Tricialyn and Dan picked Jay Peak Resort for their late-March wedding. They figured March would be a more - let’s call it “welcoming” - time for their guests (most of whom were coming from the warm southeast and had little interest in snow sports). Of course, in true Jay Peak fashion, their wedding landed on the same day over two feet of snow also happened to fall.
A snowy wedding backdrop is like a dream come true for a team of photographers like us, so we loaded up on coffee and snacks and moseyed on over to the mountain, bringing not just our normal barrage of photo equipment but our thickest Gore-Tex layers taboot.
The Aerial Tram docked for a moment in between its trips hauling 50 people at a time to the summit of the mountain. Just long enough for us to catch a first look on board the empty Tram car, and just short enough that we were able to escape without being dismembered by snow-crazed skiers and snowboarders. From there, we jumped on the chairlift to catch some quick portraits in the unrelenting snow. Snowboarding while carrying (and using) heavy camera equipment is not for the faint of heart, but it’s right in our wheelhouse. Challenge accepted.
Next, we headed back to the slopeside hotel so the bride could freshen up and we could dry our gear ahead of the ceremony.
The bright, indoor setting in the Haynes Room provided a warm, dry location for Trish and Dan’s guests to laugh and cry, as they watched these two each commit themself to the other, all the while snow continuing to pile high outside the windows. From there, everyone shifted into full-on party mode with a serious apres-ski vibe, even if many never made it out on the hill that day.
Full-day wedding shoots typically feel like a day’s worth of backcountry touring for Kim and me. By the end, our step counts are through the roof and we will have burned more calories than the rest of the week combined. Is it worth it? Always. We love what we do, and when we can work this hard so a hectic, sold-out powder day wedding can run smoothly, we feel extra great in the end.
